CORN

A Special Boy From the Temple

Corn is a very nervous little dog who has always preferred to hide away in the darkest corners. He originally belonged to the temple’s former Abbot, who took wonderful care of him. When the moved away, Corn’s world changed. In late March, his monk caretaker noticed Corn was losing his appetite, and we brought him into our rescue to find out why.

Initially, Corn was diagnosed with an E. canis blood parasite infection. While he had a hard time swallowing solid food, he eagerly drank chicken soup. However, we noticed he was in significant pain whenever his neck was touched. Further veterinary examinations revealed a substantial, worrying swelling in his throat.

A Brave Fight Against a Growing Tumor

While a month of doxycycline successfully eradicated his blood parasites, the swelling in Corn's throat unfortunately grew larger. Our vet suspects a malignant tumor on his esophagus, an infected lymph node, or an overactive thyroid.

Because Corn is fragile and nervous, standard chemotherapy is not an option for him—we want his days to be peaceful, not filled with the harsh side effects of toxic medications. Instead, we are focusing entirely on pain management and comfort:

  • Specialized Diet: Corn is still eating well, but we blend his food with plenty of warm soup to help him swallow without pain.

  • Holistic Pain Relief: He receives daily doses of CBD oil to ease his discomfort and target the swelling.

  • Careful Medication: We are currently researching safe local NSAIDs (anti-inflammatories) to manage the swollen tissue alongside a careful course of antibiotics.

Through all of this, Corn has been incredibly brave. During a recent, terrifying X-ray trip surrounded by vets and helpers, this nervous little boy didn't cry once.

Comfort

Back at the rescue, Corn is taking it easy. He isn't very energetic, but he finds immense comfort staying close to his sister, Lilly, who fiercely watches over him and takes care of him.
