Vaccinations at the Temple-August 2025

Our annual vaccination drive, a critical effort that protects not only the dogs in our care but also the wider community. For 17 years, we’ve been working to keep our dogs safe from deadly viruses like Distemper, Parvo, Hepatitis, Influenza, and Rabies.

This year, our team set out to vaccinate 150 dogs at the temple, our Healing Centre, and on the streets. We are thrilled to report that all 65 temple dogs are now fully vaccinated! This is a massive relief, as it safeguards the dogs and protects the many visitors—tourists and locals alike—who frequent the temple for its caves and cultural events.

We use a combination of vaccines that protect against five viruses, including Distemper, Parvo, Rabies, Adenovirus, and Parainfluenza. These are especially important for temple dogs who are often exposed to viruses brought in by new puppies we rescue from the streets. While we successfully eradicated these viruses from the temple for about 12 years, the recent influx of puppies has made our work more critical than ever.

The cost of this program is significant, with each vaccine costing around $5.00. We rely entirely on the generosity of our supporters to fund this life-saving work. A huge thank you to those who have already donated to this important cause. Your support makes all the difference!

Another Life-Saving Program

Vaccinations 2023

In May 2023, we launched our life-saving 200-dog vaccination program! 80 temple dogs and puppies were fully vaccinated in one day.

The heat at 42 centigrade was exhausting and extremely challenging, but we knew it was a time when a rabies outbreak could occur. Thailand had already had 13 'red zone' rabies districts, mainly in North and Central Thailand far away from us.

In July all 68 healing centre dogs and 20 puppies were also fully vaccinated. The remaining vaccines will be used for street dogs and poorer residences with large groups of dogs.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to our generous supporters who donated towards the massive 22,000 baht or $660 vaccine bill. The donations we received covered about half the total amount.

Vaccinations ensure safety against Rabies and other diseases

Vaccinations 2022

Our small team of 3 people vaccinated 40 temple dogs yesterday working with the support of the Livestock Department. Our annual program includes up to 200 street, temple, and our Healing Centre dogs.

The high temperatures we experience every summer make the possibility of a rabies outbreak much higher. 2 years ago a cat living close to the temple contracted rabies and scratched her owner who contracted the virus. The Livestock Dept put the cat down and the owner was treated and recovered in hospital. It was a very worrying time

.

We can now breathe more easily knowing these temple dogs are safe for another year from rabies as well as distemper, parvo, leptospirosis, and influenza. All the temple puppies were vaccinated within a week of them being abandoned in the temple.

Vaccinations Keep Temple And Street Dogs Safe

Vaccinations 2021

50 Temple dogs were vaccinated against a range of viruses and rabies.

We're not only keeping the dogs safe we're also keeping the community safe. We always vaccinate during the hot summer months when rabies can be a danger.

Last year a cat living a few kilometres from the temple tested positive for rabies. There was a scare in the village but we were able to prove to the Govt Livestock Dept. that all the temple dogs were vaccinated.

Your donation will keep our temple street dogs and puppies from killer viruses.

Annual Vaccinations are Vital

Vaccinations 2019

Our Outreach team recently spent a successful day vaccinating 60 dogs and puppies. In the same week, 100 dogs were vaccinated as part of our drive to keep Temple and street dogs safe, as well as our community.

We chose the most vulnerable dogs in Temples and on streets in an area where Distemper has killed many feral dogs. Annual vaccinations are a crucial part of our outreach work to eliminate killer viruses.

Puppies Vaccinated

Of utmost importance is keeping puppies safe to. Parvovirus kills young puppies in a few agonizing days.  As both the Parvo and Distemper viruses can stay in the ground for a year it’s essential the dogs and puppies are well protected by our vaccination program.

We put great importance on vaccinating young puppies as soon as they are six weeks old. The first vaccination gives minimal protection whilst waiting three more weeks for the booster to be given. In some cases where a puppy needs extra protection, we will give a second booster.

After the booster we can breathe a sigh of relief that the puppy is protected against a number of killer viruses.
